Dr. Monica Rankin, Professor of History at the University of Texas has brought social media into the classroom to increase the level of engagement of students. The experiment is perhaps too early to raise a final verdict on, however, comments from the students and the teachers sound promising.

The innate fear of looking and more importantly sounding 'stupid' in front of classmates is minimized by the semi-anonymous text message arguments flying across the screen. Cited as a source for study notes by the students, and a method of text reduction (140 character limit) by the instructor, this new technology sounds like a great marriage between humans and technology.
